Assemble and Play Sudoku

ORIENT YOURSELF IN Sudoku

PREPARATION

  • Each pair of students gets three 4×4 empty Sudoku tables on paper. If possible, the game can be played on a SciMaG wooden board with magnetic numbers.
  • Mark arrows in each corner of the empty tables (as it is marked on the cards)
  • The teacher draws an empty 4×4 Sudoku table on the board
  • Each student and teacher has one figure (students in pairs have different figures)
  • Each pair of students has pencils in 3 colours: A, B, C

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY

In the introductory activity, students are familiarised with the rules of the game Assemble and Play Sudoku, and the movements in the Sudoku table. The teacher and students together solve problems and move the figure following the given instructions.

SECOND ACTIVITY

The second part of the activity has been developed as an activity for pairs, so that each student gets his/her own cards, and when playing the game Assemble and Play Sudoku, each pair solves the same Sudoku, i.e., the initial values in the Sudoku table are shared between two players.

Each player receives 2 points for the correct number in the correct position in phase 1 (i.e., 2 points for correctly solving the respective task) and 1 point for each correct number in the Sudoku table in phase 2 of the game (i.e., for each correct number when solving the Sudoku puzzle). The two players compete against each other and try to collect as many points as possible.

Cards developed for these activities can be found here.

SUdoku in the coordinate system

PREPARATION

  • An empty 9×9 sudoku table (drawn on the board or paper), pencils or chalks in 5 different colours. If it is possible, the game can be played on a magnetic board with magnetic numbers in 5 different colours
  • Paper with a drawn coordinate system/Sudoku table in the coordinate system for each student (as a help for solving the tasks)
  • Students are divided into 5 groups/teams (each team has 3-5 students)
  • Tasks are printed (one task per paper) and divided into 5 envelopes (one envelope per group/team)
  • Each team chooses a leader who receives a colour to write down the numbers in the Sudoku table

PHASE 1: ASSEMBLE SUDOKU

Each group receives an envelope with tasks. Each student takes a task from the envelope, solves it, and writes the solution on the paper with the task. The team leader “enters” all the solutions into the Sudoku table.

The team that has finished solving its task helps the others to solve theirs. The team with the fewest solved tasks gives a task to the team that has finished.

At the end of the first phase, after all tasks have been solved and all solutions have been entered, the teacher checks and corrects them if necessary (marks the corrected results in some way or uses a color that no team uses). Each correct number entered in the Sudoku table is awarded 2 points to the group that entered it.

PHASE 2: PLAY SUDOKU

After phase one is completed and the teacher has checked (and corrected) all the entries, team leaders solve the Sudoku puzzle applying the standard Sudoku puzzle rules. Each correct number entered in the Sudoku table in this phase is awarded 1 point to the group that entered it.

Problems for each group can be found here.
